Dynamic meditation is a technique in which physical actions are involved. This term was rampant in the early 1970s. when Osho’s descriptions of the “Rajneesh Dhyan Yoga” developed. This was developed at meditation camps in the Indian mountains. This was then translated into English. His prototypical method is still called “Dynamic meditation”.
The term originally was used to refer to only certain forms of meditation. This includes the movement of the body. However with time; it came to be used more. Movement examples of such meditation were Sama and Hadra among the Sufi Mystics, the Gurdjieff movement, in the Dynamic Body Awareness concept.
What does dynamic meditation mean?
Dynamic meditation is a form of meditation practice in which we have to move the body while practicing it. Indian spiritual leader Osho of the Rajneesh movement developed this practice in the 20th century. The name is sometimes used to describe any active meditation practice. Thus, we have understood the meaning of dynamic meditation.
The trademark style of meditation, officially also called Osho Dynamic Meditation. Osho created this to move static energy in the body. It also broke the conditioned patterns in the body-mind. It involves chaotic fast breathing in which there is no rhythm or pattern. This is followed by wild movements and shouting. The full practice takes an hour to complete.
Osho who was also known as Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. He believed that sitting to meditate was difficult in the modern world. However, through movement, the yogi could find a silent point within himself. Whereas by sitting quietly, the yogi becomes aware of the chaos. One method that the Osho suggested to meditate was to keep your dynamic meditation music on while meditating.
Osho believed that cathartic methods were necessary to follow dynamic meditation. This was because it was difficult for modern people to sit and enter meditation. He went on to say that he never told people to begin sitting. With a mad dance, you begin to become aware of a silent point within you. when you’re sitting quietly, you begin to become aware of the madness.
Osho’s dialectical methods alternate activity and passivity. Adopting elements of mantra and pranayama, Latihan, kirtan, and psychotherapeutic catharsis. Dynamic meditation is Osho’s most popular active meditation that is best done at sunrise, in a group or alone. However, if it is done in a group, it will result in more energy in the process.
Rajneesh believed that many unexpressed emotions are stored in the body. The catharsis of the Osho Dynamic meditation is a strong and fast way to break the circle of the negative emotions loop. By letting negativity leave our systems through sounds and body movements, it is possible to heal the mind and the body.
Osho Dynamic Meditation comprises of five stages :
- Breathe chaotically and deeply through the nose for ten minutes. The body can move naturally with the breathing.
- Explode with intense movement and sound for 10 minutes, holding nothing back.
- Raise your arms above your head, jump up and down, and chant “hoo-hoo-hoo” for ten minutes.
- Freeze and remain in position for 15 minutes and observe.
- Move to dynamic meditation music and celebrate for 15 minutes.
